Company 13 - Artist Statement

Company 13 creates and performs wickedly funny, dark and thought provoking ensemble theatre. Glorious original music, performed live and written by the company, is integral to our shows.

We are well known for the expertise and talent of our company members and for our palpable ensemble connection.

With this breadth of experience and skill we make theatre that is visceral, disarming, unexpected and alive – theatre that celebrates the human condition in all its sensational messiness.

Company 13 started out in 2006 as a group of 13 theatre maker friends who had trained in Melbourne, Australia under the renowned teacher John Bolton, in the Jacques le Coq tradition of European physical theatre forms – mime, melodrama, Greek tragedy, character, mask, bouffon and clown. We are now a core group of 5, James Pratt, director, and the ensemble; Fiona Roake, Aurora Kurth, Christian Bagin, & John Forman.

2020 was set to be a great year of touring our show The Hunter, The Hunted across the state with the support of Creative Arts Victoria - but of course Covid 19 had other plans!

So, instead this has been a time of working on individual projects and striving to maintain an attitude of optimism about the future of the performing arts.

I can’t speak for the others (this is Aurora here) but I have personally found this year to be an incredible opportunity to have a break from constant touring and to re evaluate what it is that is important to me. I lost all of my 2020 contracts on March 19th, like most of us performers and those involved in the arts, but I was very lucky to have qualified for JobKeeper and I am extremely grateful for this assistance.

I have enjoyed watching other artists move to an online delivery but I haven’t yet ventured in to this arena. I’m sure I will have to start moving in this direction, but I don’t have the necessary equipment yet (or the motivation). Performing live and the connection with an audience is my lifeblood and I can’t wait to get back on stage!

Things are starting up again for 2021 and provided a third wave doesn’t mess with proceedings, Company 13 will be taking up where we left off and hitting the road mid year.

We give our thanks to Ivan Kemp and the Potato Shed for being such strong and passionate ambassadors for the arts!
